Mom, Dad, I've been thinking....

Last weekend Jason came into our room on Saturday morning and said, "Mom, Dad, I've been thinking and there's something I want to talk to you about."
My heart stopped. What could my serious, intense six year old have to discuss with us? Isn't this supposed to be happening later, down the road, in adolescence or when he calls from college? I turned and said, "What is it, Jay?" to which he responded, "We really need to go to the aquarium."
So we did.

Ice Skating (or is it Ice Sitting)

During A and J's first ice skating lesson I spent the entire time sitting on my hands, not because of the cold, but because I just wanted to go help them up. But I didn't. Of course, they were on the other side of the ice and getting to them would have required me walking across the ice on my hiking boots, but I digress. They spent most of the half hour in various poses on the ice, including splayed, face first, flat on their back and kneeling. I was sure that it was all over and they would never want to go back to the rink again.
But then, they stood up. They shuffled across the ice, arms out in the Frankenstein pose used so often as one year olds learning to walk. They turned, fell and got up. And they were smiling. Smiling.
During free skate time, they continued with the smiling. And the falling. And, most importantly, the getting up. They skated for the whole half hour and I had to drag them off the ice. I'm sure that no one at the rink that night was more proud of their kids than I was.

What we do here....

So, in honor of Ali and Jason's new, shall we say, obsession, I decided to start a blog so you could all enjoy the fun.

What do six year olds at our house need to amuse themselves for six hours a day? Clay. Yup, clay. All manners of clay people and animals are all around our house, sleeping in drawers, bowls, and homemade hammocks. Yesterday Dave accidentally stepped on one of Jason's family members, flattening him. When Jason expressed his dismay, Dave reminded him that small clay people should not live on the floor. Good life advice if I ever heard it.

So with that, we're off for today. Next post, j and a's excellent ice skating adventure.
